Are You Ready! Take Charge, Lose Weight, Get In Shape, and Change Your Life Forever

Like most people in America, I became familiar with Bob Harper through watching "The Biggest Loser" on television. While I don't need to lose the weight like the contestants on the show, I enjoy watching their triumphs and the challenges they perform each week are also fun to watch. From the show, I grew to like both trainers, Bob Harper and Jillian Michaels, so I decided to read Harper's book "Are You Ready! Take Charge, Lose Weight, Get In Shape, and Change Your Life Forever." It is a good basic book on health and fitness, and if you are a fan of Bob's from "The Biggest Loser," you'll enjoy his addition to the available fitness literature, even much of it can be found in other resources too.

After the introduction, Part One of the book focuses on Bob's concept of "Your Inner Compass." The four chapters in this part address getting started, knowing if you are really ready, accepting where you are and forgiving yourself, loving yourself, and changing your internal tape recorder to change yourself. For many people, especially those that are sedentary and overweight, these chapters will be important if you really ask yourself the questions Bob directs you to. You need to get your inside right before you can work on your outside, and Bob has some good advice and guidance in this area.

Part Two is titled Stepping Up to the Plate and it contains guidance on eating right. I like that Bob calls it an eating plan, not a diet in chapter five. Health and fitness really are lifelong goals and you need a lifelong eating plan, not a temporary diet. Chapter six outlines why Bob believes you should use a food journal, and he presents a very good argument as to why they will help a person lose weight. And finally in this part, Bob includes a chapter on stress busters.

Part Three, titled My Workout, is where the book becomes like many other resources out there. Up until this point, it was all text and the guidance was solid and motivational. From this point on, the book is mostly pictures and descriptions of exercises. The workouts and exercises the book contains are pretty basic, but that is okay, basics work. For the person new to exercising, like many that appear on "The Biggest Loser," these are a great place to start and the book has easy to follow descriptions and pictures. For those that already exercise a lot or have other exercise resources, you will be pretty familiar with the rest of the book.
Overall,

I think this is a good book for the person who wants to get started with a fitness plan but does not know where to start. Bob Harper's simple and straight forward advice will help you get ready, and his eating and exercise plan will help you get started on the road toward fitness. For those that already exercise a lot, there won't be much new here, and the only reason to read it is for continued motivation from Bob, and to see what he teaches. I like Bob on the show, and I liked his book.
